As you may have heard in the news, the new weight loss medication ‘Tirzepatide’ (brand name Mounjaro®) is shortly being made available to NHS patients to support weight loss. North East London Health and Care Partnership is in the process of establishing a new weight management service to make weight loss medications available for eligible patients.

In the next few months, we will be able to refer eligible people who meet the criteria to this new specialist service to access weight loss medications.
We will only contact eligible people once this service is available.
The eligibility criteria is very strict, and is as follows:
BMI Qualifying co-morbidities Other criteria
  • Those with a body mass index (BMI) greater than or equal to 40kg/m2
and 4 of the below:

  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Hypertension
  • Dyslipidaemia
  • Obstructive sleep apnoea
  • Type 2 diabetes mellitus
  • Those with a body mass index (BMI) greater than or equal to 35kg/m2
1 weight related co-morbidity and 1 of the below:

  • Active malignancy and need for urgent weight loss for planned therapy e.g. radiotherapy or surgery
  • Urgent weight loss needed for organ transplant
  • Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH), needing frequent lumbar punctures and/or visual compromise
  • Undergoing planned time-sensitive surgery for life-limiting conditions, where a high BMI is the main barrier to surgery.
  • Obesity hypoventilation syndrome (OHS)

We kindly request that you do not make an appointment to discuss weight loss injections if you do not meet the eligibility criteria. Access to general practice is difficult and resources are limited, therefore we would like very much to avoid booking unnecessary appointments for patients that do not qualify for Mounjaro injections, as this would block access to patients that are unwell and need to be seen by a doctor.
